Studio Tour

Today, I thought I’d share a few details from my creative studio. This 14’x17′ space is where much of my creativity happens. It serves as photography studio, music studio, art studio and craft studio, so I pack a lot in this space! Which also means I have to move a lot around!

If I’m fully transparent, my creative supplies actually take up more than one room (I know, I have a problem). But the perks of having your children all grown is that you can take up as much space as you want! I waited a long time for my own creative space. I can’t even count all the years I worked out of cupboards and on a folding card table! Creativity cannot be stopped by lack of space! Challenges force us to be more creative in finding ways to honor our creativity, and they test our resolve to be creative when it isn’t easy.

When I first moved into my studio, I organized everything in cabinets and closets and shelves, neatly put away. But then I couldn’t find anything! Maybe it was a habit from all those days when I had to tuck it away, but I found that having many creative tools visible was aesthetically pleasing and inspiring to me. So now I keep many things visible, but also neatly organized in containers, etc.

My space wouldn’t be complete without flowers. I have several arrangements in the room that remind me that creation is beautiful.

Vintage stores are a great place to find unique storage solutions. I found this basket at a local vintage shop. I love how it coordinates with the peachy and green tones in my space.

My husband created this island for me on a budget. He found a sealed tabletop and we used two shelves from Hobby Lobby as side supports. He mounted them on wheels and added a shelf on the bottom between to stabilize the piece. I roll this out of the way when I’m shooting photography.

I also designed this space to have cabinets and a sink so that water is accessible for painting and messy crafts.
If you don’t have a room of your own yet, don’t despair! Carve out a little space somewhere in your home and arrange it for spontaneous creativity. Even if it’s a little corner, CREATE! It’ll do your soul good!
