I’ve been quiet for a bit. Took a big break from social media and other online endeavors, but haven’t paused creatively. I’ve actually been busily working on my first self-produced song, and let me tell you, it has been a labor of love and led me through the throes of adversity!
Naturally, when you’re attempting something new there are bumps and hiccups along the way. I get that. But this has been something other than just that. Literally everything that could go wrong, did. I even had to buy a new computer to finish the song!
I wrote this particular song back in 2004. I remember at the time, I felt an immense gratitude for the liberties we enjoy in this country, but I also noticed ways that I, and others, had fostered causal attitudes about our freedoms and I wanted to capture those thoughts in a song.
I recorded a piano/vocal demo of the song and shared it with my parents and a few other people in my life and that’s about as far as it went. I didn’t know if anyone would ever hear the song and I certainly wasn’t in a situation where professionally recording it was even an option. Like so many of my songs, I figured I wrote it for myself.
Fast forward to 2020, with an ever-increasingly precarious political and social climate in relation to freedom, and this song suddenly became very, very relevant. Fast forward to a different personal situation and resources in my life, and to the opportunity to record this song and share it became very clear.
In short, I feel called to share in hope that it will inspire others to ask questions, examine their own attitudes and behaviors, and consider what they can do personally to promote the cause of liberty in our country.
It’s a crazy time to be alive. There’s a lot at stake. If we let our freedoms go, what do we have? Have we gotten so far from the past, so far from the blood that was shed for our comfort that we would give it all away carelessly? Do we even understand what that means? And more importantly, do we even care?
I finished the song today. It’s Pioneer Day here in Utah. There are American flags flying everywhere, kind of a cool “coincidence” that I would finish today, but I learned a long time ago that many coincidences are simply God’s timing.
I’m excited to share the song. We have plans to release on August 10th, unless God takes us another route. Stay tuned!
