I’ve been blocked creatively lately. Whenever I find myself looking at what everybody else is creating instead of creating my own work I know I’m stuck. And I know as well as anybody, the best way to get unblocked creatively is to create. If you overthink what you’re doing, you’ll end up blocked again. It’s not rocket science, and yet it’s not exactly easy to get over the hump sometimes.
The best way I’ve found to get unblocked is to grab a medium and free flow with it. In other words, just let whatever comes out come out. If you think too much about making something specific or creating something technically correct, you might remain stuck.
Another thing you can do is work with a medium you don’t normally work with, or a medium you’ve been wanting to work with but have no training in. That was me today. I’ve been wanting to learn to watercolor for awhile now. I have supplies and they’ve been set up for almost a week, but for whatever reason when it comes to painting (and often drawing), I freeze. So today I decided to just grab a couple of colors and paint some shapes. The above image is what came out. I’m not concerned with whether it’s technically correct or pretty at this point. I’m just glad I broke through the barrier and put some paint on the page! Hooray!
Last week, I worked on the portrait of my sister a bit. I still have a lot more blending to do, but I’m making progress. I’m still homeschooling and have a lot of commitments right now so I don’t have a ton of time for art right now. This summer should bring more time for creativity, which I’m really excited about.
