Dried Hydrangea Holiday Wreath

At the end of the garden season this year, I cut a fair amount of my strawberry hydrangea blooms–some green, some slightly turning pink on the tips. I dried them out with the intention of making a holiday wreath.

The thing with me is, I never know exactly what I’m making until it’s made! Haha! And this project was no different. Although I have a video demonstrating me making this wreath, I’d like to address what I’d do differently in case you get the itch to try and make something similar. It will make your path so much easier!

Before you even begin gluing flowers in place do these two things:
- Tie the ribbon you’re going to hang your wreath from around the base.
- Wire or glue your ornament(s) in the center of the base (in my case an inexpensive reindeer and tree I bought at Walmart last year).
If you don’t do this, you’ll have to do what I did and mess up your wreath to add these elements, and then re-do the messed up parts.

After you’ve added your center pieces and hanger you can begin hot gluing segments of dried hydrangea flowers onto the base. Dried hydrangea is very fragile and you will lose a lot of flowers to breakage. However, dried hydrangea is also great because the flowers tangle and help hold each other in place!

Keep adding flowers until your wreath is nice and full. Add additional supporting flowers (I only had 4 red strawflower, five would have looked better!), so I added some additional faux flowers to the wreath.

I love the flower confetti left over from the project! Couldn’t ignore that!

I don’t think this wreath would store well, but you could try to put it flat in a box, or storage bin, with some tissue paper to protect it. I see it as a beautiful, but disposable, project that I can recreate next year with different flower (if I want to)!
Here’s the video of me making the wreath.
